Many people have doubts regarding the magic affecting only the Gopis , who left all their work and ran towards Shri Krishna. Why not the men? Why would the melody not attract the men?
The Gopis had kept the Katayani fast which had purified their Antah Karana
( their inner being) .The rays of the sun reflect on the mirror that has no dust on it.The Antah Karana of the Gopis can be likened to a spotless mirror with no dust on it.
The Katayani Fast had made their mind ‘Vimal’ (Pure or without any stain ).The love of God appears in a pure heart. How can this love appear in the hearts which are full of sin.The hearts of the men , were not pure like those of the Gopis. The men had not purified themselves with fasting or any other discipline of ‘Yam and Niyama’. The music of the flute could not touch the chord of their heart.
The Gopis regularly got up early to do ‘dhyan’ and prayers to Katayani devi and Surya Bhagwan and by doing so all their desires were slowly eliminated. Why would renunciation not dawn on them in that case?
The flames of fire that get covered with ash cannot scorch the foot that steps on it.The fire that is yet not covered with ash is sure to scorch. In the same way the Gopis’Prem Agni was ot covered with the the ashes of ‘paap’ /sin.
The Prem Agni of the men of Brij was still covered with the ashes of sin and thus their Prem Agni remained embeded and was not bright and lustrous .
Hence the flames of renunciation could not burn within their hearts!
Yesterday I told you that the Gopis left their work incomplete and ran towards Krishna.
When renunciation dawns on someone he does not wait to complete the work at hand .Desires only increase and never decrease .When we fulfill one desire another new one crops up.
Hopes are like a river that has the water of desires and these ripples of desire keep increasing.
While going towards Nivritti Marg ( the Path Of renunciation) from the path of Pravritti (the Path of Indulgence) we decide to stall and complete a few more jobs at hand .The desire to set up the house and let it go on track and THEN renounce the world appear. On the other hand different set of thoughts regarding the capabilities of the son to carry forward the work and manage the affairs properly may appear.
If the son is married and capable then the thought of seeing the grandchild will come before going on the Nivritti marg.
The next desire would be to see the grandchild’s wedding!
In the midst of all this KAAL (time) comes and strangles the hopes of doing NAAM SMARAN
( नाम सिमरन-remebering the name of the Lord) are all lost!
This is the result of our ‘vaasanas ‘(वासना-desires) being entangled in the household duties.
The Gopis thought that they may miss the opportunity if they remained entangled in household duties.
They did not feed milk to the child , nor did they cook the food. They left everything incomplete on hearing the magical melody of the Shri Krishna’s flute.
They set the precedent for all ‘Mumukshus’( those desiring liberation and self realization) to leave everything in complete whenever the desire of renunciation dawns.
Ved Bhagwan also says –
‘Yadrev Virajet Tad Harev Praverjet’
The day renunciation dawns on you , leave the house on the same day. Wait not for time .
The thoughts of doing bhajan in old age and not while we are young will surely come.Such emotions ruin everything .When the time of death is not guaranteed , how can we guarantee the time of renuncaition ?
We can take refuge at the feet of the Lord at any time .
The only condition would be that the love for the Lord should be like that of the Gopis. We can turn towards the Lord at any age and at any time and in any condition. He only wants true love. He does not need your health nor does he need your food. If the Lord wanted all the beautiful and expensive things then all the rich people would have made the Lord their own in no time.
Wealthy people have no shortage of money and since the Lord looks for pure love a poet has thus said—
Padhyo Likhyo Na jaap Kiyo
Tap Na kiyo Gajraj
Rahman Phool Dikhayee Ke
Ter liyo Brajraj.
What wealth did the King of elephants , Gajraj present the Lord?He gave just a flower. Sudama won the heart of the Lord with some dry rice.
In Kaliyug this can be done more easily and cheaply.
Nowadays we can please the Lord with just one leaf of ‘Tulsi leaf’ and a handful of water. This is the glory of True Love.
Shreemad Bhagwad on the topic of the renuncaition of the Gopis says—
The Gopis even wore their clothes inside out in their hurry to reach to the Lord. They wore the necklaces on their feet and the payals on their necks. They had no notion of ‘Ulta Seedha’ when immersed in the love of the Lord.
