THE HUMBLE MAHATMA
From the Book of Chinmaya mission:
‘HE DID IT Swami Chinmayananda A Legacy‘
When we were studying in Sandeepany Sadhnalaya Powai (1972-75), one day Swamiji (Chinmayanandji) said that another Swami was coming to visit the ashram. His name was Swami Gangeshwaranandji. He was very old and completely blind. On the previous day, Swamiji had come to supervise the preparations to make sure everything was all right. We arranged all the flowers & other details on the speaker’s podium.
Swamiji saw two chairs on the stage and asked,
“What is the other chair for?”
“It is for you, Swamiji,” we replied.
“For me? On the stage? A great Mahatma is coming.
When He was a Swami, I was a nobody! I was nothing!
When he comes, I won’t sit on the stage.”
The next day, when Swami Gangeshwaranandji came, everybody went near the entrance.
Swamiji ran across the temple steps like a child to receive Him.
The visiting Swamiji was taken to the temple, and garlands were placed around his neck.
Swami Gangeshwaranandji sat on a single chair on the stage.
Swamiji, who sat just below Him, started massaging the Swamiji’s legs.
We can never forget that scene. Such a great mahatma “came down” (became so humble) when he was in presence of another Mahatma.
On that day, the eyes of many of the brahnmacaris were opened to the glory of Swamiji.
